Epsilon User's Manual and Reference > Variable Reference >

uncompress-files: preference variable

Default value: 3

If this variable is 1, reading a file with a .gz extension will uncompress it and display the uncompressed version. If this variable is 2, Epsilon will do the same for files with a .bz2 extension. A value of 3 does both, and 0 does neither.

This feature runs the standard utility programs gzip (for .gz) and bzip2 (for .bz2); you'll need to install them if they're not already installed. For Windows, the programs provided by the Cygwin environment will work fine.
